Somchai Wongsawat Prime Minister of Thailand

Somchai Wongsawat (Thai: สมชาย วงศ์สวัสดิ์, born August 31, 1947) is the Prime Minister of Thailand and a member of the People Power Party. Somchai had previously served as Minister of Education and Senior Deputy Prime Minister[2] since February 2008. He became acting Prime Minister on 9 September 2008 upon a ruling that Samak Sundaravej must resign for being intermittently employed as a cooking show host while in office. Somchai is the brother-in-law of Thaksin Shinawatra. On 17 September 2008, he was elected as PM by the parliament.
In 1970, Somchai graduated from Thammasat University with a Bachelor of Laws. He became a Barrister-At-Law in 1973, and earned a Master of Public Administration from Thailand's National Institute of Development Administration in 2002. In 1974 he was appointed an assistant judge, and he became a judge in 1975. Somchai was appointed to the position of Chief Justice of Pang-nga Court in 1986. He became a member of the Region II Court of Appeal in 1993, and chief justice of that court in 1997. In 1998, he was appointed to the Cabinet as Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice; he became Permanent Secretary in November 1999, and served until March 2006. Somchai was then appointed to Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labor, and held that post until September 2006. He became a member of the Thai House of Representatives in 2007.
On September 15, 2008, the People Power Party named Somchai Wongsawat as its intended candidate for prime minister. However, this decision was quickly questioned by both the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and factions within the PPP.Somchai was ratified by the National Assembly of Thailand as Prime Minister of Thailand on the 17th September, winning 298 votes against 163 votes for Abhisit Vejjajiva. The Supreme Court was also expected to rule that day in a corruption case against Thaksin and his wife, to be promulgated after the parliament votes for the new prime minister. Somchai won more than 60% parliament vote, and he will assume office upon endorsement by Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which is expected to occur within a few days
Somchai's wife, Yaowapa Wongsawasdi, previously served as an MP in the Thai Rak Thai party, which was led by her older brother, Thaksin Shinawatra. Somchai has held positions on the boards of several state-owned corporations, including Airports of Thailand, the national petroleum company PTT and Krung Thai Bank.
